On this Mother’s Day 2023
My dear dear Gaia
we pray for you
with every fiber of our beingness
We who are entrusted with earth’s care
yearn for your love, protection
and admiration
We celebrate your forgiveness
for all our transgressions
numerous as they are
We do not worship the earth
We support her
We are your children
Your babies
and sometimes we rebel
and sometimes we repel
and sometimes we just do not do
anything right
yet you still love and adore us
We desire your forgiveness
for regrettable pollution
we seek to avoid damnation
despite hellish prospects
My dear dear Gaia
we humble ourselves
at the foot of your alter
We cry for succulence
and succor from
your kindness
Do not tire of us
We are responsible
For so much damage
To your clothes
We have raped
And pillaged the earth
In your name
Progress was shouted
as a mantel piece
to cover our sins
we discover
weird fetishes
to cover our outrage
Yet still you love us
Yes, you still love us
I want to sing
joy to all the mothers
out there
But my lips feel clenched
when I try to scream
above the crowds
I will try to whisper
my hellos and greetings
wish these mothers okay
through the diatribe of noise
I only wish to bring joy
not frustration
or conspiracies
or plaintive realities
I only wish to bring joy
to the mothers of the world
to the fathers
daughters
and sons
that back them up unconditionally
Mothers do not need to be woken up
they already know the penalties
of sleeping through cries
Mothers are the reality
they do not waver in the wind
they take their children in stride
and make lives happen without
retribution or pain
This is the year of the mother
may she rest in peace
may she live in peace
Mother is not a curse
to shout at misogynists
Mother is a word of praise
and dignity
Paint portraits of mothers
in recline and thriving on life
Paint smiles on their faces
remove the venom and outrage
from your heart
– This is a day to rejoice
Kiss and hug a mother
don’t let this day go undernourished
Amen…
