Joyous Mothers
JOYOUS MOTHERS
Dedicated to my mom Blanche Jaffe who at 95 still gives me what for.
I want to sing
joy to all the mothers
out there
But my lips feel clenched
when I try to scream
above the crowds
I will try to whisper
my hellos and greetings
wish these mothers okay
through the diatribe of noise
I only wish to bring joy
not frustration
or conspiracies
or plaintive realities
I only wish to bring joy
to the mothers of the world
to the fathers
daughters
and sons
that back them up unconditionally
Mothers do not need to be woken up
they already know the penalties
of sleeping through cries
Mothers are the reality
they do not waver in the wind
they take their children in stride
and make lives happen without
retribution or pain
This is the year of the mother
may she rest in peace
may she live in peace
Mother is not a curse
to shout at misogynists
Mother is a word of praise
and dignity
Paint portraits of mothers
in recline and thriving on life
Paint smiles on their faces
remove the venom and outrage
from your heart
– This is a day to rejoice
Kiss and hug a mother
don’t let this day go undernourished
Amen…
